| History and Background
Tanzania is the “cradle” of mankind. The remains of the Homo Habilis (Handy Man) were discovered in Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge by Dr. Louis Leakey. This was mankind’s first step on the ladder to human evolution. He also calculated and found that these remains were 1.75 million years old. Many more fossils have been found here including those of prehistoric elephants, giant horned sheep and the enormous ostrich. The United Republic of Tanzania was as a result of a merger between Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964. It has a total area of 945, 090 sq kilometers – slightly larger than twice the size of California. Her population is about 33,000,000. The major industries are tobacco, sugar, mining and tourism. American Express and Visa Credit Cards are accepted in major tourist outlets. Arusha is the Tourist or Safari capital center in Tanzania. Swahili and English are the most widely spoken languages. Tanzania is home to Selous Game Reserve, one of Africa's most magnificent game sanctuaries, and the seemingly endless plains of the Serengeti National Park, one of the world's greatest natural spectacles where annual migration of over two million wildebeest followed by their predators can be observed. The Serengeti holds some of the largest concentrations of lion, cheetah and leopard in Africa. This is one of the best national game parks on the continent where these predators can be seen. Deserted beaches or islands are a good pastime for safaris in Tanzania. Step out into the vast open plains of Tanzania and you suddenly feel very, very small, it is justly described as an Africa in miniature. Geography and Wildlife
