The Samburu National Reserve is located on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River in Kenya. It is 165 km2 in size. It is located in Samburu District of the Rift Valley Province.


There is a wide variety of animal and bird life seen at Samburu National Reserve. Several species are considered unique to the region, including dry-country animal life. All three big cats, lion, cheetah and leopard, can be found here, as well as elephants, buffalo and hippos.

There are over 350 species of bird. They include Somali Ostrich, Grey-headed Kingfisher, Sunbirds, Bee-eaters, Marabou Stork, Tawny Eagle, Spur fowl, Secretary Bird and Yellow-billed Hornbill among many others. The Ewaso Ng’iro River contains large number of Nile crocodile.

Climatic Conditions

Arid and semi-arid with hot days and cool nights. It has an annual mean temperature between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Major Attractions

The Samburu National Reserve was one of the two areas in which conservationists George Adamson and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness made famous in the best-selling book and award winning movie Born Free.

The Samburu National Reserve is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting Oryx calves.


It is situated within the Rift Valley province of Kenya.

Getting There

  • By Road: Road transfers from Nairobi (approximately 345 km)
  • By Air: There are several airstrips in the park and there are daily flights from Nairobi to Samburu. Private charter flights are also allowed to use the airstrip.

Best time to visit

The dry season which is from December through March and July through October.
