Meru National Park is a Kenyan Game park located east of Meru, 350km from Nairobi covering an area of 870km2 and it is one of the most famous known parks of Kenya. It has abundant rainfall of about 635-762 mm in the west of the park and 305-356 mm in the east.


It has a wide range of wild beasts like elephant, hippopotamus, lion, leopard, cheetah, bush pig, python, puff udder, cobra, buffalo, eland, waterbuck, black rhinoceros and some rare antelopes.

Climatic Conditions

It experiences a semi-arid zone and have irregular rainfalls. Wet seasons are between April-June and November-December. Rainfall is between 635-762 mm in the west and 305-356 mm in the east.

Major Attractions

Meru was one of the two areas in which conservationists George Adamson and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness made famous in the best-selling book and award winning movie Born Free. Elsa the lioness is buried in this park and part of Joy’s ashes were scattered on her gravesite.

Between the years of 2000 and 2005, the Kenya Wildlife Service, helped by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), restored Meru National Park from an almost near ruin to one of the most promising tourist destinations in Eastern Africa.

The Mulika Lodge Airport serves Meru National Park. Tourist attractions include the home of George and Joy Adamson, Adamson’s fall, views of Mount Kenya, and the Tana River.


It is in the North east of Mt. Kenya in Meru District of Eastern Province.

Getting there

  • By Roads: Road transfers from Nairobi (approximately 348 km) via Nyeri-Nanyuki-Meru or via Embu all-weather roads.
  • By Air: The main airstrip is Kina, Mulika next to Meru Mulika Lodge and Elsa’s Kopje airstrip
