| According to the Country Report done for the Regional Workshop on Ageing and Poverty in Sub Saharan Africa in 2003, over 17Million Kenyans, which is 56% of the total population, live under the poverty line. In response to the great need to alleviate poverty in Kenyan communities, Woni Safaris in conjunction with past clients and development agencies, has set up initiatives that foster economic development through sustainable growth of local cultural activities. Tourists who have toured with Woni Safaris have had a chance to visit needy communities and have in turn responded by offering assistance to the poor. The generous support offered by visitors, along with a percentage of Woni Safaris' benefits has helped in setting up of various programs. These are: Wildlife and Environmental Conservation: The friends of the Elephant (http://www.olifanten.org) in both Holland and Belgium have played a significant role in fostering of orphaned baby elephants. Woni Safaris has partnered with channel based organizations to help in this program. Initiatives to sensitize children on conservation of natural resources, wildlife, forests, HIV and AIDS, have also been done. Some of the staff at Woni Safaris have worked with self help groups under the umbrella of ‘Environmental Friendly Services’ , a local NGO, to help conserve the natural resources in the environment. Successful initiatives to plant trees and grow crops in harsh environments are thriving under this program. Child Sponsorship: Woni Safaris has partnered with clients in Europe and America to set up an education trust fund to help assist children from poor families. Woni is currently sponsoring 7 pupils, who have been placed in prestigious schools in Kenya. Get Involved:
