Serena Sweetwaters Tented Camp

Location & Description

Sweetwaters Tented Camp lies in the heart of the privately owned 22,000 acre Sweetwaters Game Reserve enjoying magnificent views across the bush to the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kenya Kenya’s highest point at 16,900 feet above sea level. Overlooking a floodlit waterhole, the camp offers visitors an unforgettable opportunity to watch and photograph game in its natural habitat. Sweetwaters has long been the preferred retreat of wilderness and safari lovers alike. One of only four private game reserves in Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy excels in the provision of privileged seclusion and private game viewing. Thanks to its private status it also allows such unforgettable pleasures as the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (the only place in Kenya to see these highly endangered animals), visits to Morani, a tame black rhino, night game drives, guided bush walks and camel-trekking across game-teaming plains. Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary that has been set up at Sweetwaters Game Reserve, a 15-minute drive from Sweetwaters Tented Camp. A visit to this Sanctuary and the 30-minute boat ride (subject to fine weather) on the river among the chimps is a must. The aim of the project, initiated by Lonrho East Africa, Kenya Wildlife Services and the Jane Goodall Institute, was to set up a colony where chimps could be introduced, rehabilitated and taught to fend for themselves in an area similar to their natural living conditions. Priority is given to orphaned and abused chimps. The Sanctuary currently has 26 chimps, including two babies born in the Sanctuary. There is also a new Visitor's Information Center at Morani's Boma, which is a must for all visiting clients staying at Sweetwaters Tented Camp.
